Previously posted was a short article on transitional times for the economy and our use of media. This is a bit of a follow up to that posting. We are living in these transitional times and need to set a course for our destination. Those of us that are being outsourced or looking at new directions need to consider a new course. A good friend of mine just talked to me about selling a “Big Idea” as opposed to trying to sell a little idea to a small minded group. The only ones of us that are going to survive the changes of the next five years are those involved in the “Big Idea”. There are amazing changes coming.

Internet 2, the Grid, a delivery method 10,000 times faster than the current Internet. What is this going to bring? What kind of changes is this going to bring to the economy and to the marketplace? Where will the career opportunities be? What will the focus be? If ABC, CBS and NBC are utilizing Flash as their delivery method for videos and interface design where should we be looking? If these conglomerates that can afford any platform customized to their needs why are they choosing a $700.00 program you can buy online and learn?

As a designer/developer you need to set your course towards the right star. Which one is rising which one is diminishing? Will proprietary formats be here in five years or will it be all open source and inexpensive solutions. The economy is getting tighter and it’s not going away anytime soon. So set your course towards the right star and follow it to the future.
